The most common question I've heard about dermaplaning is "will I grow a beard?" The most simple answer is NO you will not grow a beard! Unfortunate for those who would love to look like the lady from the Greatest Showman.

So what is dermaplaning then and what's different between dermaplaning and using a razor to shave my face?

This week I completed my dermaplaning training, and the huge difference between dermaplaning and shaving is that dermaplaning can only be carried out by a qualified practitioner. It involves using a fine blade (sterile) to remove only the top layer of the skin and the vellus hair.

What this does is evens out the skin texture and improves the circulation which then boosts collagen and helps to exfoliate skin so that further skincare products can be absorbed into the skin more effectively.

Putting it simply it wipes out the dead skin and fluffy peach fuzz so that our makeup and skincare can sit better on our skin, giving a more youthful glow.

As you can see from this diagram there are three layers of skin and dermaplaning removes the very top layer of the epidermis. And the vellus hair. The reason why the vellus hair doesn't grow back thicker like terminal hair does is that it doesn't typically have a medula, the portion of the hair's core that strengthens it and allows it to grow longer.

So if you want to wave bye, bye to that dull looking skin and fluffy fuzz off your face then fear not, dermaplaning will not leave you growing a beard! But make sure you use a qualified, insured and competent practitioner, like ME!
